The only picture on my site not taken by me.
All I know about it is that apparently it's from 1908 (before copyright) and that the shot in its obscurity and tone is just plain amazing. It has been inspiring me for years.
What is this man preparing for, gripping that lance firmly like his life depended on it and why does he have one? How come the horse doesn't have a gas mask as it seems to defeat the whole point. Assumeably this man belongs in some sort of military faction, but what? Could the point of the mask be to hide ones identity and engage in unconventional warfare of some kind? Maybe he's wearing an enemy uniform. Then again he could be just goofing off but even his horse looks so serious, like the calm just before battle. So many questions and I’m not even sure if I want to demystify this one by knowing the story behind it. Marvelous.
