Zenith Electronics Corporation developed the world's first cordless television remote control in the 1960's. These remotes had no batteries, instead a button push triggers a tiny hammer which hits an aluminum rod, creating an ultrasonic sound that is picked up by a microphone on the television set. These remotes usually have 1 to 4 rods for equally many functions. Each rod is of different length, creating its own frequency that is analyzed by complicated transistor electronics inside the TV-set.
As handy as having no batteries to replace was, eventually electronic infra-red remotes became the norm because they could control more functions than just a few.
This chromed model is arguably the best looking of all Zenith space commanders. Scene circa early 1970's. All props are period specific.
